Brace Yourself for Another Summer of Travel Chaos: Flight Cancellations Spark Fears

The recent mayhem at Heathrow Airport during the bank holiday weekend has fuelled fears that the tourism sector will be unprepared for a busy summer season. Due to an IT failure on Thursday, British Airways (BA) had to cancel dozens of flights, generating all weekend delays. Furthermore, Heathrow's e-gates failed, resulting in huge lines and passenger delays. The airline worked tirelessly to resolve the technical issue, and the e-gates were operational again after a 24-hour outage.

Since lifting travel restrictions, Europe's airlines and airports have faced virtually daily interruptions, including strikes by French air traffic controllers, which have resulted in frequent delays across Europe. Heathrow has been affected by strikes multiple times in recent months. Security workers have gone on strike during the most recent IT breakdown and e-gate failure.

While experts agree that frequent travel disruptions are unacceptable, IATA officials are optimistic that the ramping-up issues encountered at some key hub airports in 2022 will have been resolved and that airlines are planning schedules based on the capacity declared by airports, border control, ground handlers, and air navigation service providers. On the other hand, increasing strike action will undoubtedly cause disruption, delays, and cancellations at Heathrow and other airports.

New routes are opening almost weekly in Europe, with more scheduled for 2024 and 2025. Train travel can save time and money, and it is less stressful than flying because passengers need to arrive at the station one hour before departure, and there are no limits on liquids or bags.
